The Enterprise Design Telemetry Crisis
Sep 2026
The era of defending design through aesthetic authority, subjective advocacy, or design-thinking evangelism is over.
Over the summer, we surveyed enterprise design leaders across organisations ranging from 1,000 to over 100,000 employees to understand how design operations are actually being scrutinised.
The findings point to an acute telemetry crisis:
The Scrutiny Cadence: 80% of enterprise design leaders are now required to formally justify their budget, headcount, or output at least quarterly. Nearly a third face this scrutiny monthly or weekly.
The Data Deficit: 72% describe compiling the required operational data as hard or very hard. Only 4% say it is easy.
The Efficiency Mandate: When asked for their top operational priority, 64% said: "How do I drive efficiency without changing headcount?"
The Scapegoat Dynamic: Because product creation pipelines lack objective telemetry across the handoff, design remains the default scapegoat whenever concept-to-customer delivery slows down.
Software engineering has DORA metrics and PR velocity. Marketing has attribution and CAC. Design is still relying on manual spreadsheets, team sentiment, and ad-hoc slide decks to defend multi-million-pound payrolls.
We have published the full benchmark report: "The Enterprise Design Telemetry Crisis".
It covers the core data, the three acute anxieties voiced by senior leaders, and the shift from subjective advocacy to objective workflow telemetry.
